UX Design – Generalist vs. Specialist

As a User Experience Consultancy, the UX Design role is the single most frequent position we hire for. Various online definitions state that UX Designers should be strategic thought leaders and play a very important role in creating a seamless user experience as it relates to a user’s journey throughout a site or product. This includes research, developing personas and designing various interaction points within an overall system. This of course is an all encompassing generalist type description, but sometimes like in life, there’s ideal and then there’s the reality of the situation, client or project. We find that in many … Continue reading

With social media’s increasing impact on daily life and communication, staffing firms have taken to tools like hashtags on Twitter or specific filters and groups on LinkedIn to help better assist them with their recruitment strategy in uncovering the best possible candidates. Staffing firms, job seekers and employers are using these different platforms to connect and fill positions both internally and externally. In fact, many fortune 500 companies have recently developed and/or reinforced their hiring strategies to better focus on social media as a recruitment tool, and for good reason. In a recent survey from Spherion, 47 percent of Millennials now say a prospective employer’s online reputation matters as much … Continue reading

The lowest area happens to be right in our neck of the woods … Continue reading

Keep Focused on the Right Hire

It’s rare that bad hires are accidental. Typically, you can look back and see where you went wrong or find the reasons behind why the candidate wasn’t the right one for the job. In order to avoid such issues, it’s important to maintain a strict hiring methodology that you stick to throughout the process. We stress this importance because we recognize that certain candidates can sometimes cause you to stretch and/or mold your process based on a number of factors. This is why it’s extremely vital to try and dodge such situations and adhere to your process as much as possible. … Continue reading

Welcome to career fair and internship season! This marks a great time to discuss something I try to instill when visiting schools that applies not only to students, but to everyone as well: tailor your resumes to each client. On average, hiring managers only spend seconds looking over your resume – and those seconds will either make you or break you. There are numerous things you can do to ensure that your resume will make it past the “screening” stage. When scouring the numerous boards and websites for your next “dream job,” it can be difficult to keep your focus … Continue reading

Or maybe this isn’t you at all. Maybe you’re a freelancer, looking for your next great contract. Or maybe you’re currently unemployed and have searched high and low for a job. The one thing that may benefit “all the above” is a simple solution: working with a staffing agency. They can be a valuable asset in finding the next great thing for you. In order … Continue reading

We just returned from attending Carnegie Mellon’s Design Confluence in Pittsburgh. We had a wonderful time touring the studios and meeting with a range of students from freshman to senior year. We were thoroughly impressed w/ the caliber of students, types of projects and range in the UX curriculum. We were also taken back by how engaging and outgoing the students were. They had no problem approaching us to start up a conversation to discuss trends in UX, research, or the types of mobile projects we’re seeing. They were sharp, personable, knowledgeable and most importantly, passionate about UX! We’re hopeful … Continue reading

On the verge of springtime, we had a back to school day yesterday.  We were conducting a research study at the University of Maryland with performing arts students, and at the same time, our placement team was recruiting creative and development students at George Mason University. As we were comparing notes today about the students getting ready to enter the workforce – whether it be for internships or full time jobs – we were surprised that only a small sampling had online portfolios. At GMU, we met some very talented interactive students! However, we were surprised to see that most of them had … Continue reading
